Concrete worktop in the kitchen – advantages and disadvantages at a glance

Countertops are an important – if not the most important – part of the kitchen. Every day it is worked out, they get wet, smeared with food and sometimes have to spontaneously serve as a dance floor at the kitchen party. What pros and cons has a worktop made of concrete in the kitchen, we clarify in the article.

Advantages of a concrete worktop

Apart from the fact that a concrete countertop looks great, this material has other advantages that are convincing:

  • Individual design: Most countertops made of concrete are extra cast – that is pure freedom in the choice of additives and the form. So you can, for example, just let your kitchen sink to your liking “pour”.
  • Scratch-resistant and heat-resistant: Hot pots and sharp knives can not harm concrete.
  • loadable: Concrete is a very stable material, your concrete worktop can withstand all loads without any problems.
  • Waterproof and hygienic: With appropriate sealing concrete is water repellent. Spilled liquids then simply bead off.

Disadvantages of a worktop made of concrete

As always, there are two sides to the medal. Say: There are a few disadvantages with concrete worktops, which we do not want to withhold from you:

  • Acid sensitive: Concrete itself is a very hard material, but it is also porous. That’s why concrete gets stuck in a direct confrontation with acids or aggressive cleaning agents. But you can counter this with a suitable seal or treatment with wax.
  • Cool optics: Concrete itself does not radiate friendliness. But when the concrete worktop is cleverly combined, the material forms an interesting contrast to warm materials. Concrete and wood in the kitchen, for example, is a combination that complements itself perfectly.
  • Mass: For concrete worktops, a special lightweight concrete is usually used. Due to the weight, however, it must be clarified beforehand what the static conditions in the kitchen look like.
  • Price: Worktops made of concrete are usually custom-made. Because they are extra cast, you need to reach deeper into your pocket for a concrete countertop than, say, one made of wood. If a real concrete worktop is not within your budget, you can alternatively use countertops or concrete look fronts.
