Measure height from eye level to the table surface
This is necessary to approximate the average height of the lamp to be placed on the table. It is usually recommended that the top of the lamp be level with your eyes when you sit. To approximate the height, sit on your chair next to the table where the lamp is to be placed. Then measure the distance from the table top to your eye level. Use that measurement to take into account the height of the lamp. If the lamp is intended for your bedside table, its height should be at your eye level when you sit on your bed.
Calculate the length of the shadow
Measure the length of the shadow as either 60 to 80 percent of the base length. For example, if the base length measures 16 inches, the shade length should be between 10 and 14 inches long. This will result in a lamp that is about 24 inches high. Another way to make the measurements is by considering that the shadow is about 1/3 of the total height. It should also cover the lamp hardware on the lamp base.
Think of shade with no less than 2 inches in diameter
The diameter of the screen should not be less than 2 inches in relation to the base length. For example, for a 16 inch base lamp, the screen diameter should not exceed 14 inches. The length of the shades is listed from top to bottom with its width as the diameter. The diameter can also be considered as the widest part of the lamp.
