Between 1890 and the mid-1910s, Art Nouveau interiors were created in London and Paris that aimed to integrate art and design into everyday life. Even functional objects were embellished and turned into works of art.
Art Nouveau was advertised at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1910, although at the time it was still considered quite avant-garde and revolutionary. However, by the end of World War I, technological advances had begun to streamline manufacturing processes even further, leading to the abandonment of Art Nouveau in favor of Art Deco, which relied even more on mass production.
Art Nouveau has still left a lasting legacy in two ways. First, several 20th century designers have been heavily influenced by the movement, including the Bauhaus design school in Germany and the De Stijl design movement in the Netherlands, both of which advocate integrated design. It has also left a legacy in the graphic world that has had a lasting impact on poster design and the creation of Art Nouveau illustrations.
Although it is a relatively short-lived movement, the Art Nouveau era left us with a number of permanent monuments that embody its style. Because it partially bridged the design gap between 19th century neoclassicism and modernist style Art Nouveau monuments even on the UNESCO World Heritage List, including the entire city center of the Latvian city of Riga, where more than 750 Art Nouveau buildings have been erected in the Art Nouveau architectural style.
Art Nouveau left us iconic traces that can still be seen in interior design today. In its time, Art Nouveau was considered revolutionary, and therefore its popularity increased among those who wanted to follow the latest trends.
Unfortunately, this popularity was short-lived as it gained a worldwide reputation for being over-the-top, over-the-top, lavish, and most importantly, expensive. The Art Nouveau movements subsided.
