Types of suspended luminaires

Hanging luminaires are usually of two types: chandeliers and pendants. Both are available in a large selection for the discerning buyer. Hanging luminaires hang from the ceiling, at a certain height from the floor.

Chandeliers

A chandelier is sometimes a very complex creation that is detailed and ornate, but in modern times it can also be simpler and more functional. A large, detailed chandelier is often a status symbol, although it can be breathtakingly beautiful. Because it is often large, it serves the purpose of illuminating a room very well.

Factors to consider when buying chandeliers

If you choose to buy a chandelier, there are certain factors that need to be considered. These are the ceiling height, the size of the room, the material from which the chandelier is made, the wattage of the lamp and the design of the chandelier. A chandelier that is about 17-20 inches in diameter fits a small room that is 10 x 10 feet. But if the room is 12 x 12 feet large, it is better to go for a chandelier that is 26-27 inches in diameter. Generally, a room that is smaller than 10 x 10 feet works well with a chandelier that is between 17 and 20 inches in diameter. A larger room of 14 x 14 feet holds a chandelier between 26 and 36 inches in diameter. The chandelier should also be hung at a height that is not more than about 30 inches from an object on which it is directly lit, such as a dining table.

Ceiling lights

Ceiling lamps are suspended luminaires that are both stylish and functional at the same time. There are inverted ceiling lamps, mini-ceiling lamps, island ceiling lamps, ceiling lamps with fabric shade and ceiling lamps with several lights. Hanging light colors are available in metal, glass and fabric. Fabric colors provide diffused light and are best for bedrooms.

Factors to consider when buying ceiling lights

Important factors to consider are the purpose of the light and its location. Hanging lamps usually range from 5 to 43 inches wide in size. Ceiling lights above a countertop or dining table should have a height of 24-30 inches. Make sure that the pendant lamp comes with extension rods or adjustable chords so that you can change the height if necessary. Another point to remember is to check if there is a dimming option, if the light turns out to be too bright for you.
