The monochromatic color scheme is believed to be the easiest and easiest to use as it is practically impossible to get anything too extreme since you are using variations of the same color. While pieces created with this scheme generally look clean and calming, they often seem boring too, making it difficult to create specific focal points for an interior space.
Analogous
This color scheme uses three colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel. Analog color schemes look natural and are just as easy to create as monochromatic schemes. However, they also tend to add more variety.
The best way to create an analog color scheme is to simply pick a “dominant” color that you want to use the most space visually. Next, choose a second color that will be used as a support color before choosing a third color for the accents you want to create. You should avoid:
- Use equal amounts of all three colors
- Combine warm and cool colors
Complementary
To create a complementary color scheme, you need to use two colors on the color wheel that are directly opposite each other. If you want to create something that will stand out from the crowd, this is the color scheme for you. However, it is important to remember that there are a few simple steps you should write down and follow to avoid creating anything too bold or jarring.
For starters, you can either choose one color over another or use both as accents on a neutral colored background. In general, you should choose one color for the background and another for accents.
Also, when choosing complementary colors, avoid choosing colors that are nearly of the same value, as this can be extremely difficult on the eye. To avoid this, consider changing the hue of one color and the hue of another color to make them more visually appealing.
Split complementary
Another useful color scheme to consider is the split complementary scheme, which is a variation on the traditional complementary scheme. However, this particular color scheme uses a main base color alongside the two colors that are right next to the complementary color. For example, you can use yellow, but you must select purple, red-purple, and blue-purple.

Triad
Similar to the complementary color scheme, the triad scheme also uses three colors. However, these colors are evenly distributed around the color wheel. Triad schemes are generally much less disruptive than the complementary schemes and tend to be very much alive as well. With this scheme, you want to pick one color as the dominant one while using the other two as accent colors.
Tetradic
The tetradic scheme is absolutely the richest – and generally the most difficult – of all color schemes and uses four colors evenly spaced around the color wheel. This results in two different complementary pairs of colors.
While the Tetradic scheme is also commonly referred to as the “double complementary” scheme, it works best when you choose a color that you want to be the dominant one. Otherwise, the overall scheme itself will look extremely unbalanced. In addition to diluting the colors, you should also use a neutral background so that the colors are distributed as evenly as possible.
Create your color scheme
The formal areas of the house should be painted first

Use rule 60-30-10
The 60-30-10 rule is very easy to follow. 60% of a dominant color should be used alongside 30% of a secondary color and 10% of an accent color when decorating an interior. For example, the walls of the room will likely be the 60% dominant color, while any upholstery would be the 30% secondary color and all accessories would be the 10% accent color.
Go with the architecture
People who have smaller rooms in their home generally think that when they are painted white, they appear mentally larger than they actually are. This is completely inaccurate and it is recommended not to take this route. Instead, consider choosing a warm color scheme that suits the room. Thanks to natural light, you expand mentally and at the same time feel extremely cozy and warm.
